Durbanville Library continues to be a beacon

The City of Cape Town’s Durbanville Library hosted its showcase event to mark a century of serving the community and the 50th anniversary of the iconic building. The double celebration included art and performances by residents.
‘The residents of Durbanville have shown their love for the library and have literally come to the party to participate in the performances and art exhibitions. The town’s rich history includes the library and the iconic building,’ said Councillor Patricia van der Ross, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health.
In a colourful tribute to the power of imagination, Durbieland Nursery School’s Gr R class have poured their hearts into a collection of art pieces centred around beloved book characters.
This heart-warming initiative is part of the celebrations and can be seen on the walls of the library which are now covered with vibrant pictures showcasing characters that have fuelled the imagination for generations.
As a testament to the library's integral role in fostering community ties, various local groups participated and a number of community organisations used the day to promote their causes, providing a platform for engagement, awareness, and collaboration.

- Durbanville victim empowerment program
- Mosselbank Rivier
- Durbanville Garden club
- Vroue Landbou Vereniging
- 1980 Poetry Cirlce
- Friends of Durbanville Library
- Raise a Village Knitting Club
‘Durbanville is one of our most popular libraries and has the highest membership in the City. We celebrate their historic birthday with them and applaud them for being the heartbeat of the community,’ said Councillor Van der Ross.
The library has 8 169 active members and has shown the biggest growth in membership from January to April, with 1 492 new members joining the library.
Durbanville Library currently has the second highest circulation in the City Of Cape Town with about 80 000 items.
